Our General Counsel since forming our organization, Mark brings to us an interesting and diverse background. He is a cum laude graduate of Harvard University (ALB) and Suffolk University Law School (JD), where he was awarded the American Jurisprudence Award (Equity law). Mark also attended Southern Connecticut State College (now University) and the University of Hawaii-Manoa.


Following law school, he served as a law clerk to the Justices of the Massachusetts Superior Court. Between September 1993 and April 1986, he had his own law office and then joined with his colleague, Attorney Kenneth L. Phalan. He practices law in the areas of real estate, business and corporations, taxation, estate planning, probates and estates, and civil litigation. He voluntarily served as a Judge for the Quarterfinals of the National Appellate Advocacy Competition (National Finals 1998), for several years as a Trial Judge for the Massachusetts Bar Association-State Wide School Moot Court Competition, as a presenter for the Elder Law Presentation program of the Massachusetts Bar Association, as a Lawyer in the Classroom and as an attorney for the Mock Trial Presentation of the Boston Bar Association's Law Day program.

He served in the United States Navy in nuclear engineering in the naval submarine service, with sub-specialities in nuclear chemistry and radiological controls. Mark also held positions at the nuclear submarine repair facility at Pearl Harbor Naval Submarine Base, as well as an industrial hygenist, and asbestos removal hazards control supervisor. He worked with a dolphin and porpoise research project while in Hawaii, as a drug and alcohol program advisor for the Naval Submarine Base in Pearl Harbor, and an inpatient alcohol abuse treatment specialist at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii. He was awarded the Navy Achievment Medal for his work in the drug and alcohol abuse field.

Prior to entering the Navy, Mark worked as a baker, a landscaper, in a lumber yard, and with the elderly in a nursing home. He has traveled extensively including to Guam, Korea, most of the United States, Canada, St. Kitts in the Caribbean, England, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Russia, and the Ukraine. In addition to traveling, Mark loves to fish and in January 2005 caught a trophy Atlantic Sailfish off Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He was in scouting from Cub Scouts through becoming a Life Scout with 21 merit badges, and in a Medical Explorer Post. He loves to play chess and assists people in learning to play chess. He also enjoys reading, camping, coin and art work collecting, and the theater. He also acted acted in the role of Bienstock in the play “Sugar”, in Shakespeare’s Richard II (as a soldier), in Macbeth (as Siward), and in Hamlet (as Marcellus and Horatio), as the young shepard in a middle ages comedy about The Nativity, and as a severly beaten student in an educational film about dormitory safety in colleges and universities. He served with both onstage and backdrop painting crews for several productions.

He donates his time and financial resources to numerous public charities and nonprofit organizations. He also supports and donates to numerous charitable organizations and causes including the the ARDS Foudation; Guiding Eyes for the Blind; World Wildlife Foundation; Animal Rescue League of Boston; Perkins School for the Blind (Massachusetts); Easter Seals; American Lung Association; American Cancer Association; Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS) in Salem, Massachusetts; Eastern Veterans Paralyzed Association; Massachusetts Special Olympics: and, Friends of Rosie’s Place (Boston), and others.
